One of Canada’s top Arctic archeologists says the remnants of a stone-and-sod wall unearthed on southern Baffin Island may be traces of a shelter built more than 700 years ago by Norse seafarers — a stunning find that would be just the second location in the New World with evidence of a Viking-built structure.
The tantalizing signs of a possible medieval Norse presence in Nunavut were found at the previously examined Nanook archeological site, about 200 km southwest of Iqaluit, where people of the now-extinct Dorset culture once occupied a stretch of Hudson Strait shoreline.
A UNESCO World Heritage site at northern Newfoundland’s L’Anse aux Meadows — about 1,500 km southeast of the Nanook dig — is the only confirmed location of a Viking settlement in North America. There, about 1,000 years ago, it’s believed a party of Norse voyagers from Greenland led by Leif Eiriksson built several sod-and-wood dwellings before abandoning their colonization attempt under threat from hostile natives they called “Skraelings.”
But over the past 10 years, research teams led by the Canadian Museum of Civilization’s chief of Arctic archeology, Pat Sutherland, have compiled evidence from field studies and archived collections that strongly suggests the Norse presence in northern Canada didn’t end with Eiriksson’s retreat from Newfoundland.
At three sites on Baffin Island, which the Norse called “Helluland” or “land of stone slabs”, and at another in northern Labrador, the researchers have documented dozens of suspected Norse artifacts such as Scandinavian-style spun yarn, distinctively notched and decorated wood objects and whetstones for sharpening knives and axes.

Great Pacific Garbage Patch – yikes, eek, wtf?

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, also described as the Eastern Garbage Patch or the Pacific Trash Vortex, is a gyre of marine litter in the central North Pacific Ocean located roughly between 135° to 155°W and 35° to 42°N estimated to be twice the size of Texas. The patch is characterized by exceptionally high concentrations of suspended plastic and other debris that have been trapped by the currents of the North Pacific Gyre. Despite its size and density, however, the patch is not visible from satellite photography.
Vessel KAISEI is a brigantine, a two-masted vessel square rigged on the foremast, with fore-and-aft sails on the mainmast Over the years she has visited 15 nations with crews from 26 countries and covered 40,000 nautical miles (around 80,000 km) Purchased and operated in 1991 by the Sail Training Association of Japan and renamed KAISEI, which means “Ocean Planet”.
In 1992 sailed with the Columbus fleet, flying the UN flag. KAISEI’s maiden voyage lasted 16 months throughout Europe, East Coast US, Caribbean, Panama Canal, West Coast US and Pacific Islands covering 57,000km. During this time period, the vessel flew the United Nations flag. Under Japanese flag she traveled throughout the Pacific and Asia. Carried over 10,000 trainees during the 14 year period.
OCEAN VOYAGES INSTITUTE Currently operated by Ocean Voyages Institute (Sausalito, Calif.) a non-profit 501(c)3 organization formed in 1979 by a group of international sailors, educators and conservationists whose mission is to teach maritime arts and sciences through the researching and preservation of the world’s oceans.
KAISEI has been operated to promote the preservation of the world’s oceans and maritime arts and sciences and has been involved in variety of educational and awareness projects over the past years which has seen her sailing in British Columbia, Canada, along the West Coast of the United States and Mexico.
Project Kaisei will utilize the vessel Kaisei as the figurehead and focal point in an innovative research expedition to the North Pacific Gyre.
Ocean Voyages Institute in conjunction with a team of international innovators, ocean lovers, sailors,scientists and environmentalists collaborated to launch Project Kaisei. Project Kaisei is seeking viable solutions for the problems associated with plastic waste in the Pacific Ocean’s “Plastic Vortex”, in area estimated to be twice the size of Texas.
This initial expedition will document and systematically examine refuse materials for identification while testing the best catch methods which can be utilized in collecting the waste in the Plastic Vortex for future reprocessing while at the same time maintaining the integrity of the ocean environment and without endangering sea life.
Project Kaisei has been Recognized by the United Nations – Environment Program and recently selected as one of less than ten global “Climate Heroes” in the lead up to the Copenhagen talks on climate change this December. Project Kaisei also has been endorsed by National Geographic who will be collaborating on the distribution of the documentary film. Project Kaisei is currently looking to continue the ground swell of support from individual donations, family foundations and corporations to further this necessary goal.

Two amazing videos and an excellent and clear paper that disprove the AGWH (anthropogenic global warming hypothesis).
CBC Documentary: Doomsday Called Off
“in the period of ~4,000 years ago to ~2,000 years ago, which is actually the Roman Age, ice core temperatures had been decreasing by 2.5c degrees… then temperatures increased to the mideveal warm period ~1,000 years ago. Then temperatures declined till around 1750 AD and came back up in the 18th century and then around 1875 we have the coldest point in the last 8,000 years.” – Jorgen Peder Steffensen, curator, Niels Bohr Institute, Department of Geophysics. Steffensen is involved in ice core research.
All before man made C02 emissions occurred. The coldest point in the last 8,000 years was ~140 years ago! WOW! As you can see in the graph we’re potentially just emerging from this period. Even the worst predictions of increases in warming won’t bring us back to the highest temperatures in the last eight thousand years for a very long time.
The Great Global Warming Swindle
Well worth reading is this excellent paper Disproving AWG.
The main predictions from the AGW models are:
1. The average Earth’s temperature will increase at a rate of 0.20C to 0.60C per decade at least to 2100, and will continue to climb after that if the CO2 continues to be produced by human activity at current predicted rates.
2. The increasing temperature will cause increased water evaporation, which is the cause for the positive feedback needed to reach the high temperatures.
3. The temperature at lower latitudes (especially tropical regions) will increase more in the lower Troposphere at moderate altitudes than near the surface.
4. The greatest near surface temperature increases will occur at the higher latitudes.
5. The increasing temperature at higher latitudes will cause significant Antarctic and Greenland ice melt. These combined with ocean expansion due to warming will cause significant ocean rise and flooding.
6. A temperature drop in the lower Stratosphere will accompany the temperature increase near the surface. The shape of the trend down in the Stratosphere should be close to a mirror reflection of the near surface trend up.
Each of these points is addressed in depth and dispensed with in the paper whose conclusions are:
The final question that arises is what prediction has the AGW made that has been demonstrated, and that strongly supports the theory. It appears that there is NO real supporting evidence and much disagreeing evidence for the AGW theory as proposed. That is not to say there is no effect from Human activity. Clearly human pollution (not greenhouse gases) is a problem. There is also almost surely some contribution to the present temperature from the increase in CO2 and CH4, but it seems to be small and not a driver of future climate. Any reasonable scientific analysis must conclude the basic theory wrong!!

An increase in pale surfaces would help to contain climate change both by reflecting more solar radiation into space and by reducing the amount of energy needed to keep buildings cool by air-conditioning. Since 2005 California has required all flat roofs on commercial buildings to be white and Georgia and Florida give incentives to owners who install white or light-colored roofs. Put another way, boosting how much urban rooftops reflect would be a one-time carbon-offset equivalent to preventing 44 billion tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. ‘For the first time, we’re equating the value of reflective roof surfaces and CO2 reduction,’ says Dr. Hashem Akbari. ‘This does not make the problem of global warming go away. But we can buy ourselves some time.’”
What? The AGW (anthropogenic global warming) hypothesis says that the radiation is being kept IN by the C02 in the atmosphere… thus it matters not that it’s reflected back into space by white surfaces on the SURFACE of the Earth SINCE they ARE well within and UNDER the green house gas layers of the atmosphere (not counting the painting of mount everest et. al.)! Dah!
What kind of bizarro world is this where the radiation can be reflected back and NOT be stopped by the VERY C02 (and other) GREEN HOUSE GASES that are the problem?
I guess we’re going to use magic white paint to tell the photons that hit the magic white roofs that they are special photons and that they have a pass to magically not be blocked by the green house gases in the atmosphere on their way out.
Now that’s a good business to be in, selling magic white paint.
It is the height of nonsense coming out of Chu’s brain as you can’t have it both ways there Steve and Al, either the green house gasses keep the radiation trapped in OR they don’t! Which will it be?
If the green house gasses can’t keep the heat radiation in then it follows that AWG is now proven false by Chu’s statement.
If the green house gases do keep in the heat radiation then AWG might have some tiny probability of being true AND Steven Chu’s been proven an idiot for wanting to paint the world a 1984 gray.
I don’t know about you but in Canada we like it toasty thus darker colors for buildings are better to keep it warm in the winter and use less energy for heating.
White buildings in the southern regions closer to the equator make sense to keep the buildings cooler in the heat that is there most of the time.
Saving the use of energy makes a lot of sense but why confuse the issue with bad science and terrible environmental notions that this somehow has to do with the sketchy AWG hypothesis?
It’s also nice to Chu to finally acknowledge that the Sun does in fact play a role in heating the earth.
Interesting how mind numbingly stupid this notion as presented by Chu is.

You’ve got to be kidding. This has everything to do with climate! WOW! The area is being drenched with snow!
Update 1: It turns out that May 2009 (is) was quite cold up here in Canada. See a Canada has Cold May Report. Personally I vote for an increase in global temperatures to say what it was 8,000 to 4,000 years ago during the Roman Age or even a little higher. Brrr… in Vancouver. – pwl
Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for the region yesterday, still in effect today, stating the city will likely be blanketed with the white stuff by this afternoon.
The forecasted high is 5 C.
“The worst has yet to come,” said Environment Canada weatherman Greg Pearce. “You’re not out of the woods yet.”
About 4.5 cm of the snow landed in the Edmonton area yesterday, forcing unhappy campers to storm from a RV park in droves and keeping sun worshippers indoors.
The mercury remained in the low single digits.

How do you know if you or someone else has Swine Flu? Plus, how to stop spreading Swine Flu and reduce your risk in getting it

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in humans the symptoms of the 2009 “swine flu” H1N1 virus are similar to those of influenza and of influenza-like illness in general. Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. The 2009 outbreak has shown an increased percentage of patients reporting diarrhea and vomiting. The 2009 H1N1 virus is not zoonotic swine flu, as it is not transmitted from pigs to humans, but from person to person.
Because these symptoms are not specific to swine flu, a differential diagnosis of probable swine flu requires not only symptoms but also a high likelihood of swine flu due to the person’s recent history. For example, during the 2009 swine flu outbreak in the United States, CDC advised physicians to “consider swine influenza infection in the differential diagnosis of patients with acute febrile respiratory illness who have either been in contact with persons with confirmed swine flu, or who were in one of the five U.S. states that have reported swine flu cases or in Mexico during the 7 days preceding their illness onset.” A diagnosis of confirmed swine flu requires laboratory testing of a respiratory sample (a simple nose and throat swab).
The term differential derives from the word difference: careful differential diagnosis involves first making a list of possible diagnoses, then attempting to remove diagnoses from the list until at most one diagnosis remains. In some cases, there will remain no diagnosis; this suggests the physician has made an error, or that the true diagnosis is unknown to medicine. Removing diagnoses from the list is done by making observations and using tests that should have different results, depending on which diagnosis is correct.

Plus Wolfram Alpha has Mathematica functionality built into it so you can use it to verify the computations of others.
Using Wolfram Alpha to compute “weather Canada” produced the following interesting information. The Alpha Wolf uses a weather station near the center of the place you ask for. As a result it picked Arviat, Nunavut, Canada (red dot in map of Canada above) as the closest weather station to the center of Canada. Since Canada is huge and goes quite far up North this makes the center of Canada quite far up north.
Most Canadians, some 75+% live within 90 miles of the USA border, in part due to historical reasons which is in large (aka huge aka the main friggin reason) part due to the frigging cold weather any further North. Take it from someone who has lived in Edmonton for eight of the coldest years in recent memory (the 1970′s), -30c to -45c for months at a time is really really cold especially when they don’t close the schools until -45c. Naturally it hovered at -43 for weeks… walking to school in -43c weather up hill in a snow storm… and walking uphill back home again in the same conditions but only deeper waist deep snow…. grrrrr arrrrg…
Darn, looking at that map it’s clear that Greenland should be part of Canada. Let’s start by taking Hans Island! Oh wait, that’s ours already. Onward to the mainland of Greenland! Oh, wait… nah… it’s just frozen Vikings there… Ok, Denmark you can keep Greenland but we get to keep Hans Island! Thanks.
Oh, on a climate note Hans Island will play a role as the following events have unfolded of late:

March 17, 2007 – Scientists from the University of Toronto and the Technical University of Denmark announced plans to install an automated weather station on the island, some time in the summer of 2007.
July, 2007 – Canada updates satellite photos and recognizes international border as crossing through the middle of Hans Island, not to the east of the island as previously claimed.
Very cool, Canada now shares an actual land border (1.3 kilometers long) with Denmark, a European country! Actually now both Canada and Denmark have borders with two countries each! Wow! So, Hans Island is where North America and Europe physically meet! Very cool that it’s way North of 60, wow, it’s north of 80! Yikes. Brrr…
I wonder if the weather station was installed and if there are any data from Hans Island? Oh, it looks like the Hans Island Ice Flow observation and weather station might have been delivered now. Maybe that desolate place is useful after all.
Danish and Canadian researchers are co-operating to establish a weather station on Hans Island, reports Ritzau. Even though Denmark and Canada do not agree about who owns the 1.3 sq km rocky island located in the Nares Strait between Greenland and Canada, scientists from the two countries say they co-operate and use the island for scientific purposes. For that reason, a weather station was shipped up to Hans Island last week, by Preben Gudmandsen, professor emeritus at the Technical University of Denmark. The weather station will initially be located at the base in Alert in northern Ellesmere Island. From there it will be flown by helicopter to Hans Island. Weather permitting, the station should be operable in May. Information from the weather station will offer researchers the data they need to work out a better weather model for the area and determine how ice from the Arctic Ocean is transported south through the Nares Strait.
The ongoing fuss about Hans Island might be entering its last verse. The small, wind-blown island located between Greenland and Ellesmere Island in Canada which has given Danish and Canadian diplomats gray hair will most likely house a joint Danish-Canadian meteorological weather station. Work on the weather station is expected to begin at the start of the International Polar Year. If all goes according to plan, initial data will tick in starting next year. The joint effort has been organised by professor emeritus Preben Gudmandsen from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and Prof Kent Moore of the University of Toronto. The project is seeking the blessing of the Danish Foreign Ministry and will subsequently be sent for approval to the Canadian Foreign Ministry, writes Polarfronten. After the formal details have been worked out, it’s just a matter of digging in. DTU and the University of Toronto have agreed to split the work based on their individual abilities. In the real world, that means the Canadians will end up with the heavy loads with establishing and financing the technical aspect while the Danes are responsible for expertise and collecting data from the area. Both Gudmandsen, the University of Toronto and the Danish and Canadian foreign ministers are looking forward to the plans so the meteorological research station can provide more than answers to researchers’ questions.
Still looking to see if the weather station went ahead or was stalled due to geo-arctic-politics. Anybody know?
While Canada is absorbing islands into the fold let’s have Canada merge with the Turks and Caicos Islands to warm up our temperature average in Canada, which is what would statistically happen, right? Call it Canadian Warming or Warming of Canadians who visit the newest island of Canada. It’s also a sure way, and maybe the only way to truly claim that Canada’s Arctic is warming up – see the average for the whole country goes up when we add in a nice toasty island to the mix. Ah the wonders of lies, damned lies and statistics. Ah the wonders of curing a serious Vitamin-D deficiency on a warm sunny beach.
Anyway back to the topic, here is what part of the Canadian weather info provided by the Alpha Wolf, oh, Wolfram Alpha, looks like. Oh, is that a cooling trend? Nooo, it couldn’t be…
You can get at the underlying data. Too bad it’s only ten years… Cooling trend? I suppose that depends on how many years and which years you’re looking at and how you compute the trend and how you “skew” the data in your favor, oh pardon me I meant to say how you “filter” the raw data which isn’t good enough for publication, oh, darn, drats, damned data is a mess. Let’s fix that the proper way shall we?

Using Wolfram Alpha for the first time tonight it spit message up when it couldn’t get an answer due to a heavily trafficked servers on it’s first day in operations. Very cool Dave. However, really subjecting Dave to such abuse from the likes of me. Tsk… tsk… tsk… actually it’s quite a cool tool.

In every way imaginable, that is real, science and objective humanism obliterates not just religion but the need for religion as well. Objective Reality, Nature, what is real verses what is fantasy and delusional beliefs that an invisible super being that violates all of, or the vast majority of, the known and well tested laws of science, laws of Nature, and even the nature of Nature is very clear.
Dead bodies don’t rise from the dead once brain death, organ death, heart death, and cell death have set in – not even in modern hospitals can that be achieved. The only gods that exist are the ones within the skulls of believers, the fantasy gods that they construct to avoid the harsh facts of life: that they, that all, will die the permanent death without any life after death. Even the memories of our lives left behind with those still alive will fade with time and the passing of the ages. Even the Earth and all that is on it will perish given time and celestial events in our solar system.
That which makes us unique in space and time and in biology passes into oblivion from whence we came in time. There is no hope of an eternal salvation. Hope itself is a great killer of minds. The kind of hope that supports delusional thinking that that which is impossible in Nature can happen, that hope dooms you and all to a path of delusional fantasies of rising dead bodies, of the doom of death avoided, of walking on water, of all the other miracles that require the other great killer of minds and free will, faith.
Pernicious faith, the evil of the ages roosting within the dark minds of it’s committed adherents. Faith the denier of objective reality. Faith the denier of that which is real and the limits of reality. The dead only come back to life in zombie movies and other silly mythologies only most people can tell that zombie movies are fantasy yet for some reason those same people can’t tell that their jesus is also just a fantasy delusion of epic proportions. The act of faith kills the best minds and brings them into the fold of the cult of death that each and every religion or faith on earth represents. A cult focused on selling life immortal if only you’d make your donations as a good member. The greatest con game perpetrated upon the human species by their fellows.
Oh, I went to the midnight showing of the action fantasy film, “Angels & Demons”. As far as action goes, it’s got that in spades. Intrigue, for sure. Suspense, yup. Delusional fantasies, absolutely tons of delusionals all over the screen spouting their silly beliefs of gods and demons. They even have a pope as an action figure! Never saw that one coming! Overall a good movie if you can stomach the religious nonsense and not take any of it seriously; if you do you know that you’re beyond the typical religious delusional and are into the total nut job category. They even have a really big boom. I’ll have to say that the cinematography was awesome but the music was one of the best parts of the film. Yes, it’s pretty much 24 meets the Vatican conspiracy chest of delusions. Bright light, bright light.
Of course the movie opens with the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and spins a technobabble story with, oh scary, antimatter! Yikes. How about some real science to correct the silly myths that Angels & Demons took extreme liberties with.
Don’t know if this last one qualifies as science but what the heck.

How do we know global warming is a problem if we can’t trust the U.S. temperature record?

This report on the US Temperature Surface Stations (pdf) raises serious questions about the whole premise underlying the “man cause global warming crisis”. IF the underlying data is corrupted and inaccurate how can any conclusions of science be drawn from them?
Serious questions are raised and need to be answered. Heads must roll. They do that too in science.
Executive Summary
Global warming is one of the most serious issues of our times. Some experts claim the rise in temperature during the past century was “unprecedented” and proof that immediate action to reduce human greenhouse gas emissions must begin. Other experts say the warming was very modest and the case for action has yet to be made.
The reliability of data used to document temperature trends is of great importance in this debate. We can’t know for sure if global warming is a problem if we can’t trust the data. The official record of temperatures in the continental United States comes from a network of 1,221 climate-monitoring stations overseen by the National Weather Service, a department of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Until now, no one had ever conducted a comprehensive review of the quality of the measurement environment of those stations.
During the past few years I recruited a team of more than 650 volunteers to visually inspect and photographically document more than 860 of these temperature stations. We were shocked by what we found. We found stations located next to the exhaust fans of air conditioning units, surrounded by asphalt parking lots and roads, on blistering-hot rooftops, and near sidewalks and buildings that absorb and radiate heat. We found 68 stations located at waste water treatment plants, where the process of waste digestion causes temperatures to be higher than in surrounding areas. In fact, we found that 89 percent of the stations – nearly 9 of every 10 – fail to meet the National Weather Service’s own siting requirements that stations must be 30 meters (about 100 feet) or more away from an artificial heating or radiating/reflecting heat source.
This site in Marysville, CA has been around for about the same amount
of time, but has been encroached upon by growth in a most serious way
by micro-site effects.In other words, 9 of every 10 stations are likely reporting higher or rising temperatures because they are badly sited. It gets worse. We observed that changes in the technology of temperature stations over time also has caused them to report a false warming trend. We found major gaps in the data record that were filled in with data from nearby sites, a practice that propagates and compounds errors. We found that adjustments to the data by both NOAA and another government agency, NASA, cause recent temperatures to look even higher.
The conclusion is inescapable: The U.S. temperature record is unreliable.
The errors in the record exceed by a wide margin the purported rise in temperature of 0.7º C (about 1.2º F) during the twentieth century. Consequently, this record should not be cited as evidence of any trend in temperature that may have occurred across the U.S. during the past century. Since the U.S. record is thought to be “the best in the world,” it follows that the global database is likely similarly compromised and unreliable.
This report presents actual photos of more than 100 temperature stations in the U.S., many of them demonstrating vividly the siting issues we found to be rampant in the network. Photographs of all 865 stations that have been surveyed so far can be found at Surface Stations dot org, where station photos can be browsed by state or searched for by name.

Shivers, it’s getting cold in here – how inconvenient. Please don’t destroy our planet by attempting to save it Gore. Don’t Gore Earth with faulty science, please.
Ok, to be fair, Al Gore is a politician who – for some motivation – has tried to grasp and understand the issues around the “global warming as caused by man” hypothesis (whatever that actually is today), yet he had failed to get even basic facts right. This is not surprising since many politicians get it wrong when it comes to science, heck even scientists get it wrong! It’s such an early science without much good data (the data keep changing which itself is a red alert) and a diverse set of scientific opinions of what is going on and it seems very little actual HARD science. Maybe we’ll have it right in a thousand years… since we’ll have more accurate data then. Until then stock up on winter wear and sunscreen just in case the ice age or the warming commeth. Hedging your bets is a good idea due to the uncertain data and bad science that’s out there in the public.

Standing near the edge of the Northwest Passage, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced a pair of measures yesterday to boost Canada’s ability to prevent pollution and monitor shipping in its Arctic waters.
The Harper government plans to introduce legislation that will extend the enforcement zone of the Arctic Waters Pollution Prevention Act, which prohibits ships from dumping waste.
If the facts show that the Catlin Survey or their support teams left these oil drums in the Arctic on Ellesmere Island THEN THEY HAVE POLLUTED the Canadian Arctic and Canadian Law Ought to be brought to bear upon them for such egregious acts of anti-environmental pollution.
Here is one law in Canada that might apply. What other environmental laws would apply and for which charges against the Catlin Arctic Survey can be brought (should they be guilty of the accusation of polluting the arctic)?
